Generally payroll obligations in Tanzania require companies to first deduct income tax from each employee’s monthly salary (at prescribed tax rates and tax bands) and remit the same to the tax authority within seven (7) days following the end of the relevant month. The employer (“withholding agent”) has an obligation to deduct income tax from employment incomes of its employees. For the monthly tax bands and the applicable tax rate for each band refer to our Tax Guide in the Library section of this website.

Second, is to make monthly social security contribution for each employee in Tanzania to the approved retirement funds of the employee’s choice (such as NSSF, PPF Fund, PSPF Fund, LAPF Fund etc.). Currently, the contribution is at 20% of the gross salary, but for NSSF the employer can recover up to 10% of it from employees. The contributions need to be remitted to the relevant Fund within 30 days following the end of the relevant month.

And third, is to make monthly payments of the Skills and Development Levy (SDL) to the tax authority (applicable to only employers with at least 4 employees). Currently, SDL is payable at the rate of 5% of the wage bill. SDL needs to be remitted to the tax authority within seven (7) days following the end of the relevant month.
